Happy Easter!

9 Apr

Hi lovely readers,

Well it’s been a busy week followed by a lovely weekend and it seems my posting has fallen blog-wagon. Check back in next week, when I’ll hopefully be more organised.

FYI some wing girls headed to The London in Balmain the other night and had a very happy night chatting to lots of great guys. It’s a nice cosy pub, so perfect now that the colder nights are here.

Hope you all had great long weekends!

Love: easy as A, B…

AB Hotel
225 Glebe Point Rd
Glebe

Percentage of surveyed men who were single: 56%

Percentage of surveyed men in a relationship who have single friends: 100%

Meat-o-metre: Connect with men over great conversations which will hopefully lead to dinner dates.  (daytime); A good venue for some light-hearted flirting over a glass of champagne.  (evenings)

Prime time: Friday night and Monday trivia nights

Crowd: Locals of mixed ages and persuasions. Younger, funkier crowd enjoys the courtyard on Sunday afternoons and cocktails at night. Older crowd enjoys good food and watching the game downstairs.

Wing-girls: No more than three so you can sit on a communal table or couch.

Wears: Funky casual downstairs, glam casual upstairs at night

Top tip: Visit more than once as different times in the week attract different crowds.

Like a sample bag from a fashion show, the AB offers a cross section of inner west male society. Cruisy and laid-back during the day, you’ll find the locals unwinding after a round of their favourite sport or tucking into a meal. In the evening, men from the broader community indulge in cocktails while listening to live music. Trivia night is popular, so grab your girls, form a team and brush up on your general knowledge. Attending regularly will help you get to know your competition. The staff are worth meeting too. Friendly, fun and cute, your champagne will taste even bubblier.

When love came to town

21 Mar

Town Hall Hotel
326 King Street
Newtown

Percentage of surveyed men who were single: 56%

Percentage of surveyed men in a relationship who have single friends: 100%

Meat-o-metre: Connect with men over great conversations which will hopefully lead to dinner dates (evening) which turns into a good venue for some light-hearted flirting over a glass of champagne later on.

Prime time: Fridays after 10pm

Crowd: Friendly, straight, relaxed crowd of locals after work, with things heating up later on.

Wing-girls: Maximum three. Room on the balcony is limited.

Wears: Casual

Top tip: Cash in on the after work crowd between 6 and 7pm.

The Town Hall is a modest pub, overshadowed by its more glamorous neighbours. The men you’ll find drinking here are much the same: genuine and down-to-earth. The after-work crowd isn’t huge but it’s predominately male and single. In the evenings, the music’s low and the atmosphere casual, an ideal combination for friendly banter. Later on the tempo increases and the crowd thickens, drawing men who aren’t up for the more intense vibe of Bank Hotel. Don’t let the gaming room downstairs put you off. Head straight upstairs and enjoy the bounty of this hidden treasure.

Luck of the Irish

14 Mar

Happy St Patrick’s Day for the 17th!

PJ Gallagher’s
195 Victoria Road
Drummoyne

Percentage of surveyed men who were single: 33%

Percentage of surveyed men in a relationship who have single friends: 100%

Meat-o-metre: A good venue for some light-hearted flirting over a glass of champagne (earlier), turning into a true meat-market later. Slip on your sexiest outfit and have fun.

Prime time: Friday and Saturday nights

Crowd: Very straight, sports-loving locals in their 20s-mid 40s.

Wing-girls: As many as you like.

Wears: Casual with heels you can dance in.

Top tip: Keep to the main area around the downstairs bar. Be sure you don’t get lost in one of booths.

A typical Irish pub where locals wind down with a pint. Attracting far more men than women, you’ll find sports teams commiserating or celebrating on the weekends and amateur gamblers enjoying poker nights during the week. Trivia and pizza nights keep the men happy. With $5 cocktails during the week, you and your girlfriends will be in a good mood too. There’s live music downstairs on Friday and Saturday nights, so take your dancing shoes. Since the guys tend to leave the dance floor to the ladies, make sure you spend some time mingling at the bar.

Single unity

7 Mar

Unity Hall Hotel
292 Darling Street
Balmain

Percentage of surveyed men who were single: 33%

Percentage of surveyed men in a relationship who have single friends: 100%

Meat-o-metre: A good venue for some light-hearted flirting over a glass of champagne (afternoons/evenings) which turns into a true meat-market later on. Slip on your sexiest outfit and have fun.

Prime time: Later on Friday and Saturday nights

Crowd: Jazz-lovers and locals downstairs, guys wanting to pick up upstairs.

Wing-girls: Not too many or you might not get in

Wears: Casual downstairs, glam casual upstairs

Top tip: Take a few fun girlfriends. Some nights you might need to BYO entertainment.

The Unity is the pub people move on to when everything else closes. Because of this, the crowd tends to be on the inebriated side. If you’re not up for some alcohol-fuelled flirting, hit the taxi rank and head home. On weekends there’s usually a live jazz band downstairs. Upstairs is a nightclub which sometimes doubles as a karaoke bar. Ladies looking for the real nightclub experience will be disappointed, but the less intense vibe here is the perfect arena to show yourself off in. Loud music will limit conversation but will encourage other kinds of communication.

Courting for singletons

29 Feb

The Courthouse
202 Australia Street
Newtown

Percentage of surveyed men who were single: 60%

Percentage of surveyed men in a relationship who have single friends: 100%

Meat-o-metre: Connect with men over great conversations which will hopefully lead to dinner dates.

Prime time: Friday nights and Sundays. Very popular on public holidays when lots of non-locals drop by.

Crowd: Mixed crowd of locals or people who work nearby. Good blend of artistic and sporty guys who are friendly and ready to chat.

Wing-girls: Three at most.

Wears: Artistic casual

Top tip: The courtyard is a great place for dinner but be sure to move back to the bar when you’re finished, where it’s easier to approach men and be approached.

The Courthouse is the Newtown equivalent of The London Hotel. After work, local residents and employees gather around the bar to wind down. Although the crowd’s mixed, there are plenty of straight men whose relaxed and friendly natures make them approachable. The pub attracts a broad range of ages too, helpful for the more mature lady. Sport is usually on the TV screen near the bar. Why not cheer on your team with the men? The pub has a strong Newtown personality: diverse, artistic, socially conscious and open-minded. If you like the neighbourhood, you’ll love the men at The Courthouse.

The Exchange for singles

23 Feb

The Exchange Hotel
94 Beattie Street
Balmain

Percentage of surveyed men who were single: 80%

Percentage of surveyed men in a relationship who have single friends: 100%

Meat-o-metre: Connect with men over great conversations which will hopefully lead to dinner dates.

Prime time: Friday and Saturday nights

Crowd: Smaller crowd of straight, laid-back locals enjoying jugs of beer downstairs or cocktails upstairs.

Wing-girls: Maximum two. The space upstairs is quite intimate. You don’t want to overwhelm it.

Wears: Chic casual

Top tip: Upstairs is generally booked out for functions on a Saturday night. If no one’s at the bar, you’ll need to stay downstairs or move on.

Like a Gemini, The Exchange has two distinct personalities. Downstairs is casual and familiar. Local lads relax with a beer, play pool or challenge each other to an arcade game. Upstairs is lush and loungy. Grab someone’s attention by sipping a martini in killer heels. The pub doesn’t attract the same volume of locals as other places because of the function rooms, but the crowd is relaxed, friendly and unpretentious. Men attending functions still use the main bar, so don’t write the evening off until you’ve conducted a full talent appraisal. It’s worthwhile mingling downstairs before investigating the crowd upstairs.

Percentage of surveyed men who were single: 43%

Percentage of surveyed men in a relationship who have single friends: 100%

Meat-o-metre: Connect with men over great conversations which will hopefully lead to dinner dates in the courtyard, and a good venue for some light-hearted flirting over a beer inside.

Prime time: Whenever there’s a band playing that the men love.

Crowd: Lovers of live, original bands.

Wing-girls: As many as you like.

Wears: Funky casual with dancing shoes if you’re staying for the gig.

Top tip: Catch someone’s eye as you eat your Pad Thai in the courtyard.

Meccafor music lovers, this is the place to go if you’re looking for your rock god. With a predominately male crowd, you’ll think you’ve entered Heaven. Edgy and cool but friendly, men gather in the courtyard for a beer and dinner before heading inside. It’s the perfect opportunity to check out the crowd, even if you’re not staying for the gig. Other activities like Pub Cha and free movie screenings will help you get to know the locals. Visit the website before you head over to make sure the line-up is aimed at the boys.

Fertile plot for singles

8 Feb

3 Weeds

Rozelle

Percentage of surveyed men who were single: 78%

Percentage of surveyed men in a relationship who have single friends: 100%

Meat-o-metre: Connect with men over great conversations which will hopefully lead to dinner dates.

Prime time: Friday and Saturday nights or Sunday for the locals

Crowd: Interesting, funky, intelligent men with a sporty slant and a laid-back attitude.

Wing-girls: Maximum four. Kick the night off with a round of pool and invite a few guys to challenge the winners.

Wears: Funky casual during the day, glam casual at night

Top tip: Spend some time in each section so everyone gets to check you out.

Not convinced a Balmain man is right for you? Cross The Border (aka Victoria Road) and head to this fabulous pub, which attracts men from all over Sydney. Funky younger guys can be found in the upstairs pool room or in the courtyard if it’s warm. The older crowd heads for the front bar, which also has pool tables. The food’s delicious but don’t linger in the dining area. Mingling is tricky when everyone’s seated. Check out the talent while you eat, then suss out which room it heads to after. Music remains at a civilised volume, perfect for flirting.

A playground for singles

The Monkey Bar
255 Darling Street
Balmain

Percentage of surveyed men who were single: 69%

Percentage of surveyed men in a relationship who have single friends: 100%

Meat-o-metre: A good venue for some light-hearted flirting over a glass of champagne.  (daytime or evenings), A true meat-market. Slip on your sexiest outfit and have fun.  (later)

Prime time: Friday and Saturday nights

Crowd: Straight, fashionable, crowd-conscious guys who are ready to flirt.

Wing-girls: As many as you like but don’t create an intimidating crowd.

Wears: Glam casual

Top tip: Catch the post-work crowd on Friday then stay for the later-comers.

The Monkey Bar is true to its name. It’s definitely a bar, not a pub and for singles, it’s a playground. Although it’s known as a place to pick up, don’t be put off. The men are friendly, fun and usually not sleazy. The light-hearted mood makes it perfect for flirting. Catch the locals after work on a Friday, then stay for a dance. As the music gets louder, more and more non-locals will join you on the dance floor. Be careful not to get tucked away upstairs or at the short end of the bar. Just like in real estate, location counts!
